For every action that comes to pass, there is a purpose behind it. Without purpose, no action has reason to be fulfilled. Reason necessitates a reasoner. For all intents and purposes of this blog, I will be the reasoner.
If you don’t know me, my name is Dalton. I am not a writer. I do design work for a construction company, build furniture, run, love Jesus, love my family. I have been guilty of being an overthinker for most of my life. This has been the cause of much wasted time while trying to make simple decisions in life. However, it has also led to many thought-provoking conversations with different people. Nothing warms my heart quite like receiving a text that begins something like, “So, I’ve been thinking and wanted to get your opinion on something”. I have on friend in particular that has sent mile long texts in this form on a few occasions. Shoutout Luke K.
Over the last 4 years, I have begun to see the overthinking gene as less of a curse, and more of a blessing. Society has accepted and gotten in line with the idea of being a worker and not a thinker. You can thank John D. Rockefeller for that. Wake up, go make the man some money, occupy your mind with TV until bedtime, sleep, repeat. Living that may not seem depressing in the moments, but it sure reads as depressing.
I don’t want to pretend like I have it all figured out, but I do acknowledge that by God’s grace I have at least been able to identify that problem within myself. Reengaging the mind is painfully similar to the process Neo goes through in the movie series “The Matrix”. To clarify, I do not believe we are only in a conscience realm while our bodies lie in a pod that is overlooked by robots. I just think our minds have been locked down in a similar, metaphorical fashion.
Regardless of your stance on literally anything, I know for a fact that your belief in something has been challenged, refuted, or even shown to be wrong somewhere between 2020 and 2024. Whew, I know I have been on a roller coaster. I won’t get into any details yet, plenty of words to write in that arena at a later time.
Here is a question for you. When your stance or belief was challenged, how did you react? Were you defensive? Did you write it off immediately because you assume your viewpoint on everything is correct? I ask these questions because this is where I started. We all have convictions, beliefs, and opinions. There is a reason we have them. Experiences, influence of other people, and internal reasoning all are developers of convictions, beliefs, and opinions.
Closing the mind on a fact or opinion brings a small sense of relief. One less thing to worry about in our crazy world. The danger here is that we are fallen creatures, and more often than not we will close our mind on an issue while having a wrong answer. We then are less likely to reopen and reevaluate the issue. There is absolutely a fine line here. One side of the line works through thoughts and situations while finding truth, while the other side lives in constant stress that they can know nothing.
My purpose in creating this blog is two-fold. I want to continue to exercise critical thinking through any and everything. While I do that, I wish to record some of it, share it, and bring along anyone who gives up a few minutes a week to read and engage. Topics will vary broadly. I will begin next week in my first blog series titled “God by Logic.” If you read that and already have issues with it, I understand. I can identify 3 types of people (and their reasoning) that will not even like that title. Just give me a chance and read next week’s post!
Please be patient as I learn how to present these thoughts. This method of presentation is new to me, but I promise to learn it and make it more appealing.
I would love engagement on all of my posts, as that is my ultimate goal – conversation. Please leave a comment below if you don’t mind!
Thanks for your time this week. See you next week!
